Meet George Schultz: champion weight lifter, retired City Engineer for
the City of Carson, CA, and avid diecast collector | BY ANDY GOODMAN
You don’t get strong, smart or do much of anything worth doing without a fire in your belly; whether he’s racking weights or hunting down the latest acquisition, George Schultz’s approach is full-on and focused. Talk about hardcore ... when his assemblage
of scale cars outgrew its confines, George hired a contractor, paced o; a piece of his yard and
added a new room onto his home.

His friends and family probably
didn’t bat an eye. George’s love
of cars started in his teens.
He’d sneak into dealerships
to get a gander at the latest
machines before his buddies
could claim bragging rights.
One of his favorites was the
1958 Lincoln Continental,
a car he called “huge and
futuristic.”His own first car
was a red, Chevy 283-powered
’ 53 Ford hardtop with
“Heartbeat” painted on its side
and four saucer-style chairs—
liberated from a living room
set—bolted to its floorboards.
A Buick Invicta and ’67 T-Bird
were passing fancies; in
addition to his daily driver,
George currently owns a 1962
Ford ;underbird Landau (in
red, of course) and an equally
crimson 1992 Acura NSX that
he regularly takes to cruises
and shows. Along the way, he’s
also built a couple of serious
performance machines,
including a 427-powered Astra
kit car and a wicked turbo V6- powered sand rail. ;e latter machine gave George the ride of his life, then put him in the hospital. He’s since detuned the beast, and now enjoys hitting the dunes in it at a more casual pace. Not that he’s slowed down. Like a lot of collectors, George has his eye on other things, too, including stamp collecting, gaming and 3D animation and cinema. ;at stamp collection is contained in 34 volumes; the 3D collection consists of movies and special programs which George and his wife view on a jumbo TV. In between, he likes to wander the virtual worlds contained on the Xbox360, PS3 and PC. ;e cyber universe can be fun, but after seeing these photos, we’d be hard pressed to spend any time away from world where George keeps these cars on display. ■
