SUNSTAR’S
1958 FORD FAIRLANE

958 was quite a year. Satellites were going up, air speed records were dropping like flies, and the word “aerospace” got coined just in time for the USSR to ramp up its nuclear testing. If that didn’t make Americans nervous, the home team’s travails probably did:
a Navy ship lost an atomic bomb at sea and the U.S. Air Force accidentally dropped a similar
device on a house, in the ironically named Mars Blu;, SC. ;ankfully, neither fumble resulted
in a chain reaction, and nobody got incinerated.
Over at Ford Motor Company, another bomb had dropped, and its name was Edsel. As
much as Dearborn would have welcomed it, this one didn’t cause a chain reaction, either,
and its impact on the company’s bottom line—to the tune of $250 million— almost drove
Ford into bankruptcy.
