SUPERCAR COLLECTIBLES’ AWB DODGES
BREAK COVER 1: 18| $135 EACH
In 1964, Ford, Mercury, Plymouth and Dodge’s best factory-backed production hot rods were going at it tooth and nail at drag strips all over the country, all in the name of “win on Sunday, sell on Monday.” With factory engineers from the car makers slaving away
alongside the top drivers of the day, every advantage got taken, and any idea that might
gain a better ET was on the table—and in the car—pronto.
;e most outrageous step in this
one-upmanship came by way of
Chrysler’s Dodge and Plymouth
“Altered Wheelbase” cars. ;ese
machines were so bizarre that
they were immediately outlawed
by the NHRA, and relegated to
running in Factory Experimental
at the more liberal AHRA-
sanctioned events, or competing
on the lucrative match racing
circuit. Supercar Collectibles
honored the Plymouth variants
of these machines a little while
back (see DCX, Spring 2011); now
they’ve released a companion
series of altered Dodges, and
we get to relive the fun again …
again.
