“B
entley.” Has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? British; staid, solid and stately. Images of broad green lawns and landed gentlemen come to mind; butlers, white gloves, polo ponies and music played in a chamber. These days, the Queen of England
drives one (well, gets driven around in one), and glitterati from hotel heiresses to rap moguls
seem drawn to the brand like paparazzi-maddened moths to a flame.
They may be elegant, but Bentleys have also long been known for something else:
performance. Starting with Walter Owen (W.O.) Bentley’s first bespoke road machines, circa
1921 (some of which went straight out the factory doors and into competition), the name
has always been synonymous not only with refined elegance, but with deep-chested top
speed.
